Ventilation is the least visible part of a roof and one of the most decisive. Two identical roofs installed on the same street can differ by a decade in lifespan purely because one attic breathes and the other does not.
1. What Ventilation Actually Does
Air enters low at the soffits, warms, and leaves high at the ridge. That steady movement carries away the heat that cooks shingles from underneath in summer and the moisture that condenses on cold decking in winter. Without it, both accumulate.
A poorly ventilated roof can age at roughly twice the rate of a well ventilated one.
2. Signs Your Attic Is Not Breathing
The symptoms usually appear indoors long before anything is visible outside. Any of these is worth investigating.
Upstairs rooms noticeably hotter than the rest of the house
Rust on the nail points showing through the decking
Damp, matted, or discoloured insulation
Ice dams forming along the eaves each winter

3. Balance Intake and Exhaust
Adding vents at the ridge without clear intake at the soffits does very little, because the system needs both ends open to move air. Insulation packed against the eaves is the most common blockage we find. A ventilation assessment is quick, inexpensive, and often the cheapest way to add years to a roof.
